Thousands take part in first Mumbai Pride since decriminalisation

The first Pride event since homosexuality was decriminalised last year has taken place in Mumbai.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets to celebrate the event.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in a ruling from India’s Supreme Court last September. The judges were unanimous in their decision to strike down the ban on gay sex, which would previously result in a sentence of life imprisonment.

India Today reported that the theme of this year’s Mumbai Pride was Pride For All. The outlet also shared a video of LGBT+ people celebrating and dancing on the streets for the parade.

Mumbai is the most populated city in India. Many have said that this could be the most attended Mumbai Pride ever, although final attendance figures have yet to be confirmed.
